Jiang Zemin Meets Advanced Mass Sports Workers
Sport is a matter concerning more than 1.2 billion people and should be promoted, said Chinese President Jiang Zemin while meeting representatives of advanced mass sports workers Sunday in Guangzhou.

Jiang, also General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, was meeting the representatives prior to the opening of China's National Games, scheduled for November 11 to 25 in this southern Chinese city.

Extending his regards to advanced workers representing some 3,000 units across the country, Jiang said China has made progress in both competitive events and mass sports in recent years. Chinese athletes excelled at the Sydney Olympics last year, and Beijing succeeded this year in bidding for hosting the 2008 Olympic Games.

The current National Games will once again review China's sport strength and level in an all-round way, said Jiang, emphasizing that the principle of coordinated development of competitive and mass sports should be implemented, and the fundamental mission of the sports work should be to improve the people's health.

The Chinese President pointed out that a sports service system for all the people should be established gradually so as that people could go for sports and body-building in a scientific and healthy pattern.

Jiang noted that sport is playing an ever more important role in people's life and stressed that the call to improve the whole nation's quality certainly includes the improvement of people's physical quality. He expressed the hope that all the sports workers should continue their efforts to further the advancement of competitive and mass sports.

Present at the meeting were Zhou Guangzhao, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, Ye Xuanping, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and Wang Gang, Yuan Weimin, Lu Ruihua and Li Zhijian.

A total of 1,986 individuals and 2,988 units from across the country were commended for their outstanding contributions in promoting mass sports since 1996.
