Participants at an annual general meeting of the National Association of Non Governmental Organizations (NANGO) have agreed to open dialogue with the government in light of the strained relations between the two sides, the Zimbabwean News Agency reported on Sunday.

"NANGO shall hold a meeting before it convenes another one with Public Service, Labor and Social Welfare Minister July Moyo," said NANGO executive director Jonah Mudewe.

"The meeting with the minister is aimed to iron out issues such as the perceived misconception about NGOs, the safety of NGOs and the rule of law in Zimbabwe," said Mudewe.

The participants also showed their concern about the absence of a strong independent body to monitor the presidential elections to be held next year.

The government has accused NGOs of funding the opposition Movement for Democratic Change and has threatened to deregister the offending institutions.
