The China-Germany Economic Law Institute co-founded by Nanjing University and Georg-August-University Goettingen was renamed as China-Germany Law Institute last week, in a bid to expand the exchanges and cooperation in law between the two countries.

The institute was established in Nanjing University, one of China's elite schools, in 1989, and has become the only institution engaged in both teaching and academic research between the two countries.

Some 50 students have received master's degrees and Ph.D.s from the institute over the last decade, and eight research annuals and six sets of law books as well as hundreds of papers have been published.

Vice-President of the Federal Assembly of Germany Antje Vollmer said at a ceremony marking the re-naming that the institute had made remarkable achievements. She hoped more research be carried out to further the bilateral cooperation.

According to Jiang Shusheng, president of Nanjing University, each student of the law institute studies in Nanjing for two years before going to Germany to write the required thesis. Those who pass necessary tests will be awarded either master degree or Ph. D.s from the two countries.
