Russia has withdrawn all of its troops and weapons from army bases in Georgia, which will dispel Tbilisi's fear of Russian military presence and help to develop a good relationship between the two countries.

Several days ago, Russia pulled out its remaining possessions and personnel from the Gudauta military base in Abkhazia, a breakaway pro-Moscow region of Georgia, which was officially disbanded on July 1, 2001, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"The Gudauta military base was disbanded not only de jure, but also de facto," the ministry said, expressing "gratitude to the Abkhaz authorities for their assistance" in the pullout process.

Some installations of the base "will be used in the interests of the CIS Collective Peacekeeping Forces for maintaining peace in the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict zone," the statement said. The CIS peacekeepers will stay in Gudauta with a support group, it added.
