Israel continues to oppose the involvement of the European Union (EU) in efforts aimed at resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Israel Radio reported on Thursday.

Israel keeps the stance because the EU is inclined to favor the Palestinians, the radio quoted diplomatic sources as saying.

Israel also rejects any involvement of an international observer force in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, saying that observers will only serve the Palestinians.

The Israeli stance was in an apparent response to reports by the Palestinian newspaper Al-Ayaam on Thursday that the EU has come up with a peace plan for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Al-Ayaam quoted Palestinian Minister of International Cooperation Nabil Shaath as saying that the EU has presented the plan to the Palestinians and they welcomed it.

According to the newspaper, the plan consists of two parts, one of which is a diplomatic section dealing with the establishment of a Palestinian state, end of Israeli occupation and solution to the issue of the Palestinian refugees on the basis of the U.N. resolutions 242 and 383.

The other deals with security issues, the implementation of the Mitchell report and Tenet recommendations, and the deployment of international monitors in the Palestinian area.

EU's move is seen as part of its efforts to drum up support from moderate Muslims for the ongoing U.S.-led war against the Afghan Taliban regime for harboring Osama bin Laden, a Saudi-born multi-millionaire suspected of masterminding the September 11 terror attacks in New York and Washington.
