The key to a settlement of the issue of Afghanistan is to eradicate the root of terrorism, Kazakh President Nursultan Abishevich Nazarbayev said Thursday in Alma Ata.

The United Nations should help Afghanistan establish a transitional government so as to carry on lawful elections in the country for national leaders, Nazarbayev said at the annual meeting with diplomatic envoys to Kazakhstan.

The next step should be to help Afghanistan rebuild its economy after the United States-led military strikes against the country, which has been haunted by war for 20 years, said the president.

He noted that poverty was a vile soil for extremism and terrorism.

Nazarbayev also said Kazakhstan would be committed to fight against terrorism, and called on the international community's efforts to prevent new terrorist bases appearing in Afghanistan.

Kazakhstan, the largest state in Central Asia, opened its airspace to the U.S. after the terrorists attacks in New York and Washington on September 11.
