More than 43,000 foreigners have been granted permanent residents status in Beijing, according to sources with the municipal foreign affairs office.

More than 43,000 foreigners have been granted permanent residents status in Beijing, according to sources with the municipal foreign affairs office.

In this group are some 13,500 students, 5,000 diplomats, 1,200 foreign experts and a considerable number of journalists, sources said.

In addition, there are some 6,500 foreign people working in the overseas-financed firms, and 5,400 working in the agencies of many overseas-based companies.

As a fast-growing international metropolis, Beijing had approved a total of over 16,000 overseas-financed enterprises by this September, with the contracted investment hitting US$34.47 billion, sources said.
