With an overwhelming lead in the snatch, Chinese lifter Xiao Ying claimed the women's 63kg category gold medal at the world weightlifting championships Wednesday in Antalya.

After taking the snatch at 105kg Xiao Ying managed a weight of 125kg in the jerk, which gave her a winning total of 230kg for the honor.

It is the second overall gold medal for China at the championships after Gao Wei won the 48kg category on the opening day of the championships.

In the snatch, Xiao Ying had a 2.5kg advantage over her nearest rivals Anastasia Tsakiri of Greece and Kuo Ping-chun of Chinese Taipei.

While in the jerk, after Tsakiri and Kuo Ping-chun finished their first lift at 120kg Xiao Ying had 122.5 in her first lift, which forced Tsakiri and Kuo Ping-chun to try 125kg in the second jerk.

The two succeeded and Xiao Ying followed their steps. In the third and final chances, Tsakiri and Kuo Ping-chun tried 127.5kg but ended in vain, which ensured Xiao the overall gold medal.

"I know I can win here. My rivals are not so strong as I have expected," said Xiao Ying, adding that "I had prepared to break the world record in the jerk as my personal best is 140kg

The listed world mark in the jerk is 133kg set by Nataliya Skakun of Ukraine at the Junior world championships this year.

However, sustained injury on the back forced the student from China's northeast Liaoning province to miss the world mark lift in Antalya.

According to her coach Zhang Wenxi, Xiao Ying got her back injured in 1998 and the injury recrudesced last February.

Dondu Ay of Turkey could be a heroine on the platform this evening when she tried her best in the jerk.

After failing the barbell of 122.5kg in the second lift, she asked 127.5kg in her third attempt, in which she could only manage to lift the weight at her chest but could not lift that weight over her head and stand on her feet.

In her desperate effort, the Turkish girl tumbled down and fell on her chest, lying on the platform until she was carried out on a stretcher.

Watching her daughter from the stand, Ay's mother sobbed and then cried.

"She (Ay) was fine," said an official with the Turkish weightlifting association. "It was only psychological problem. She hopes to win for Turkey."
