The people of Guangdong Province will not let the whole Chinese down in their hosting the ninth National Games. They will spare no efforts to make the games a top-class national sports gathering in terms of facilities, environment, organization and sporting results.

Lu Ruihua, Guangdong's governor and executive president of the organizing committee, made those comments in a recent interview with reporters.

Guangdong has made considerable progress in economy and other aspects of the social life ever since China adopted the policies of opening to the outside and reforms more than 20 years ago, Lu said. With a GDP of 962.2 billion yuan RMB (116 billion US dollars) last year, this year's figure is expected to be over 1,000 billion yuan RMB (120.4 billion US dollars). Such a solid and fast economic progress has provided a strong backing to Guangdong's bid for hosting the games.

Creative Approaches Adopted for the Current Games

Guangdong had adopted some creative ways in hosting the sixth national games 14 years ago, which came out a good reference for the province in organizing the current games, the governor said.

"We're seeking new thoughts and ways for hosting such a comprehensive national sporting event", Lu said.

In organizing the games, Guangdong has adopted many measures in line with the market economy. In funds raising, for example, the organizing committee has totally given up the traditional way of seeking financial aid and turned to corporate sponsorship as the only means. The organizers also adapted themselves to international mode in the sales of TV coverage rights.

"We are trying to stage a games featuring of good environmental protection, high level of sciences, technologies and civilization," said the governor.

And efforts are being made to stage a highly competitive and civilized games and any non-sportsmanship including cheats by doping shall face severely punishment, Lu added.
