Number of Phone Users in China Exceeds 287 MillionThe total number of telephone users in China has exceeded 287 million, including 167 million fixed phone users and 120.6 million mobile phone users.
According to an official with the Ministry of Information Industry, the telecommunications fiber cable across the country reaches 1.25 million kilometers in length.
China now has the second largest telephone network in the world and it ranks third in the world in terms of information industry. China's number of mobile phone users has just narrowly surpassed the United States, whose mobile phone users number 120.1 million.
According to the Tenth Five-Year Plan, by the end of 2005, the number of mobile phone users on the Chinese mainland will number 260 million, an increase of 20 percent year on year.
The information industry ranks first among various industrial sectors in China and the export of relevant products has played an important role in foreign trade.
