Asian Countries Urge Safe, Peaceful Use of Nuclear EnergyAsian Countries attending a regional nuclear forum on November 13 urge to further promote the safe and peaceful use of nuclear technology.
The initiative will be carried out in seven fields such as utilization of research reactors, application of radioisotopes and radiation for agriculture, application of radioisotopes and radiation for medical use, public information on nuclear energy, radioactive waste management, nuclear safety culture and human resource development, said a communique released at the closing of the first meeting of the Forum for Nuclear Cooperation in Asia ( FNCA).
The forum is attended by top nuclear energy officials from nine Asia-Pacific countries, namely Australia, China, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, between November 10 and 13.
Participants also agreed to recognize the forum as an effective mechanism for enhancing socioeconomic development through active regional partnership in the peaceful and safe utilization of nuclear energy.
The Asian region, whose economic growth is among the fastest in the world, is expected to be one of the three major nuclear- generation centers along with the United States and Europe in the new century, they said.
They believed that the FNCA plan will lead to the establishment of effective infrastructure for development and peaceful utilization of nuclear energy in Asian countries, and bring many socioeconomic benefits, enhancing public awareness of the peaceful use of the nuclear energy.
The second and the third FNCA meeting will be held in Japan and South Korea in 2001 and 2002 respectively.
