Yunnan, with its complex topography, minorities'customs, natural and cultural views, is perfect for a self-driving tour. If you want to have a self-driving tour, there are some places you must visit: Lijiang, Yulong Snow Mountain, Zhongdian, and the Tiger Leaping Gorge. If you have enough time, you can also visit the Lugu Lake, and the legendary Kingdom of Females will impress you.

Recommended Destinations for A Self-Driving Tour :

1.Southern Yunnan:
Xishuangbanna, "Mengbalanaxi" in ancient Dai language, means an ideal and happy land. This place is famous for its amazing tropical rainforest and unique ethnic customs. It is a popular vacation destination in China. The Water-Sprinkling Festival, held every April, attracts lots of tourists. It takes 9 hours to come to Xishuangbanna from Kunming, the distance is 400 kilometers.

2.Northwestern Yunnan:
In the mysterious northwestern Yunnan stand elegant plateau old towns and rough snow mountain and lakes. Northwestern Yunnan is absolutely irresistible. It truly is a holy place, it is pure and clean. When you see the natural views which have not been destroyed, your soul is deeply touched. Three different routes can let you have a taste of a different northwestern Yunnan.

Route one: Drive along the Dian-Zang highway: Kunming-Dali-Lijiang-Shangri-la-Mangkang(Tibet)-Lhasa.

Route two: A tour to Lijiang and Dali: Kunming-Dali-Lijiang- Shangri-la.

Route three: A round trip: Kunming-Binchuan-Lijiang-Jianchuan-Dali-Wei Mountain-Xiangyun.

3.Western Yunnan:
Come to the Yi ancient town Chuxiong via Kunming, feel the romance of Dali. Drive to the tourist attraction Tengchong, visit the Hot Sea and rest in hot spring. Experience the Silk Route, have a border trip then do some shopping. Then go to Mangshi to taste tropical fruits, worship the Longling battle site and go back to Longyang. It takes 10 hours to cover the distance of 739 kilometers between Kunming and Tengchong. Kunming-Tengchong-Lianghe-Yingjiang-Longchuan-Ruili-Mangshi-Longling-Longyang-Kunming, this route covers mainly expressways, so it is suitable for family cars. But it's better to drive a SUV to have a relaxing trip.

4.Northeastern Yunnan:
It is wild to drive in northeastern Yunnan. You will pass through the Huize old town and appreciate the sea of flower. Then you drive to Zhaotong to meet the ethnic group and visit Dabao Mountain. After that, you will come to Doushaguan to see the grand borderland. At last, you can see the sea of bamboo in the south. This route covers 610 kilometers and it takes 11 hours.
