Gulangyu Island (People's Daily Online / Xue Meng)

Top things to do in Xiamen – Wonder around on the island feeling the sea breeze

Gulangyu Island, located southwest of Xiamen, is reachable by a five minute boat ride. Gu in Chinese mean “drum” and Lang mean “waves”. The island is surrounded with huge reef and when the tide comes in, the waves pound the reef and it sounds like beating a drum. The island is well known for its distinct architecture. Many houses are former residences for western consulates during the late 1800s and early 1920s. Due that the island is very small, no cars are allowed on this island. It’s not very hard to explore every corner of the island. Take your time, feel the sea breeze and at the same time visit some interesting sites such as Shuzhuang Garden, Sunlight Rock and the Piano Museum. Someone call the Island as the hometown of music as it’s a place with most of residents owning a piano at home in China. You also may enjoy a free concert every evening in the music hall in the center of the Island. Beautiful music mixed with the sound of the sea, small allies surrounded by trees and grass, ancient walls full of green creepers… Here is truly the “Garden of the Sea”.
