Geographical conditions of Shaanxi Province

Shaanxi Province is the continental monsoon climate. It extends more than 800 km in the south and north direction and covers a multiple of latitudes, therefore, the climates in north and south are significant different. The area in the north along the Great wall is arid and semi-arid temperate climate while the rest area of north Shaanxi and Guanzhong plain are warm temperate semi-arid or semi-humid climate. The basin in south Shaanxi is northern subtropical humid climate and most of mountainous area is warm temperate humid climate.

The temperature in west Shaanxi shows a trend of gradually reduction from the south to the north. The average annual temperature is between 7℃ and 16℃. The average annual temperatures of north Shaanxi and Guanzhong are 7℃to 11℃ and 11℃ to 13℃ respectively. The front mountain area and valley area in south Shaanxi is the warmest area in the whole province and the temperature usually stays between 14℃and 15℃. Influenced by monsoon, Shaanxi enjoys four distinctive seasons while the winter is cold and the summer is hot. January is the coldest and the average temperature is respectively -10℃ to 4℃ in north Shaanxi, -3℃ to 1℃ in Guanzhong and 0℃ to 3℃ in south Shaanxi. July is the hottest and the average temperature is respectively 21℃ to 25℃ in north Shaanxi, 23℃ to 27℃ in Guanzhong and 24℃ to 27.5℃ in south Shaanxi. The temperatures in spring and autumn rise and fall easily. The difference in temperature in summer between the north and the south is small while that in winter is large.

The south Shaanxi has a higher annual precipitation while the north has a lower rainfall. The annual precipitation in Shaanxi shows a decreasing trend from the south to the north, and is significantly influenced by the mountainous terrain. The annual precipitation is respectively 400 to 600 mm in north Shaanxi, 500 to 700 mm in Guanzhong and 700 to 900 mm in south Shaanxi. The precipitation in Shaanxi varies in different seasons. It has the most precipitation in summer, accounting for between 39 percent and 64 percent of the annual total. In summer, the precipitation in north Shaanxi is the highest. The precipitation in Shaanxi in autumn, accounting for between 20 percent and 34 percent of the annual total, is less than the summer but more than the spring when the precipitation accounts for 13 percent to 24 percent of the annual total. Shaanxi has the least precipitation in winter, merely accounting for one percent to four percent of the annual total.
