On Nov. 30, 2013, Chinese Navy's 16th batch of escort formation to the Gulf of Aden set sail in Qingdao, east China's Shandong province. It was the 9th escort mission of a shipboard aircraft regiment of the North China Sea Fleet, setting record in terms of troops and equipment used. As the first shipboard helicopter unit of the PLA, the regiment has set over 30 records in Chinese aviation history. It realized three historical changes: from coast-based to ship-based; from short sea to ocean and from carrying out transportation mission to rescue, antisubmarine and BVR operational missions.
