Ms. Oldfield also talked about cruise business. In recent years, Halifax sees approximately 135 cruise ship calls annually, carrying about 250,000 cruise passengers and 100,000 crew members. The economic spin offs brings in over 50 million dollars to the local economy. While visiting the Chinese port counterparts, Chinese ports always ask Ms. Oldfield to share their best practice of cruise operation as Chinese ports are also actively pursuing cruise business opportunities. Ms. Oldfield believes cruise business has high potential for many ports in China.

The reporter also learned in order to leverage more opportunities with China, Halifax Port Authority set up a China Virtual Office and appointed Mr. Sam Zhang, originally from Shanghai, to promote Atlantic Canada and to build and serve a better relationship with Chinese customers. Sam told the reporter that there are two direct services connecting Shanghai, Qingdao, Ningbo, and Tianjin. The major commodities through the Port of Halifax include: paper, pulp, seafood, agricultural products and general merchandise. At the end, Ms. Oldfield told the reporter Halifax and China will have a bright future and will build prosperity together. She agreed with the observations of the Chinese Ambassador to Canada, His Excellency Zhang Junsai, who said Atlantic Canada is not only famous with its lobster, but also rich in iron ore from Labrador, Zinc from Nova Scotia, potash from New Brunswick and its offshore oil and gas resources along the Atlantic coast. All of these are a great fit to the Chinese market. Canada will become a very important partner for all Chinese people to help realize their "Chinese Dream".
