Ms. Oldfield said the Port of Halifax has seen a structural change in the pattern of trade through Halifax. Since the last global financial crisis, trade with Europe has been declining but trade with Asia, mainly with China, has been increasing consistently. The total trade volume with Asia has been increased to 48 percent of total port throughput whereas Europe now sits at 38 percent. From 2008 to 2012, the trade volume with China has increased 53.5 percent. Container traffic with China has long surpassed any European countries and has continuously ranked as the No. 1 trading nation through the Port of Halifax for the past several years.

Whiling visiting Halifax, this reporter also visited the biggest seafood company in Atlantic Canada, Clearwater Seafoods. The CEO of Clearwater, Ian Smith mentioned how seafood exports to China have increased dramatically. Local live Atlantic lobster exports to China have increased 2,000 percent in the past five years. At the same time, surf clams and sea cucumber have also started entering the Chinese market. Ian said the local lobster from catch to being delivered to the family dining table in China only needs 48 hours. By the end of this year, China will replace the United States as the biggest seafood export market for Clearwater.
