Opportunity in 2001: Buying B Share
In 2001, China opened B share to individual domestic investors.
B Share market was set up in February 1992, but it was not accessible by domestic investors until 2001 when the Chinese authorities tried to boost the B-share market by opening it to individual Chinese investors. At the time, investors from outside Chinese mainland were not allowed to buy yuan-denominated A shares until 2002 when a new scheme was launched allowing licensed foreign investors to invest in A shares. In recent years, Chinese investors have lost interest in B shares as the number of yuan-denominated Class-A shares boomed. The B-share market became marginalized and B-share era was gone. Not many people seized the opportunity.
