Chronicle of Events in Drug Control in Guizhou (After the People’s Republic of China was founded) (6)

February 27 The provincial drug control meeting was held in Guiyang. Guizhou governor Shi Xiushi, vice governor Wang Zhengfu, Jiang Yanhu, secretary of Guizhou Politics and Law Commission, and Li Xianhui, deputy secretary of Guizhou Politics and Law Commission, delivered important speeches respectively at the meeting. Peng Dequan, deputy head of Guizhou Public Security Department, made the provincial drug control report in 2000. People in charge of relevant work from the Publicity Department of Guizhou Provincial Party Committee, Guizhou Economic and Trade Commission, Guizhou Higher People's Court, Guizhou Economic and Trade Commission, and Guizhou Civil Affairs Department delivered speeches.

May 26 In accordance with relevant spirits of the Ministry of Public Security, Guizhou Public Security Department formulated the Measures for the Rating of Compulsory Rehabilitation Centers of Public Security Authorities in Guizhou.

June 23-26 42 middle-level and grassroots People’s Courts in all prefectures, cities, and localities in Guizhou held sentence meetings, and publically announced the sentences to 395 drug criminals related to 264 cases. Among these criminals, 37 criminals who had committed the most heinous crimes were sentenced to death according to the law. Approved by the People's Procuratorates at all levels, the public security authorities publically arrested 989 drug crime suspects.

June 26 The opening ceremony of the Nation Drug Control Eduction (Guiyang) Base was held in the drug rehabilitation and recovery center of Guiyang Public Security Bureau. Li Yuanzheng, deputy director of the National Drug Control Commission office and deputy head of the Narcotics Control Bureau of the Public Security Ministry, governor Shi Xiushi, Jiang Yanhu, secretary of Guizhou Politics and Law Commission and head of Guizhou Public Security Department, Wang Xiaodong, secretary of Guiyang Municipal Party Committee, vice governor Long Chaoyun, leaders of member units of Guizhou Drug Control Commission, and leaders from Guiyang Municipal Party Committee, Municipal People’s Congress, Municipal government, and Municipal Political Consultative Committee attended the opening ceremony.

September 17 Invited by vice governor Wang Zhengfu, a visiting delegation consisting of American policemen and civilians, led by Harry Lee, police commissioner of New Orleans, Louisiana, paid a four-day friendly visit in Guizhou. The delegation visited the drug rehabilitation and recovery center in Guiyang and the National Drug Control Education (Guiyang) Base, and exchanged views with the policemen in Guizhou on issues including carrying out drug control exchanges and cooperation.
