The United States also intensified the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
The U.S. and South Korean defense chiefs Leon Panetta and Kim Kwan-jin agreed to formulate the joint deterrence policy against nuclear threats by 2014 at the annual Security Consultative Meeting on Oct. 24. Panetta said that as the DPRK has posed a threat to the United States and South Korea, regional stability and global security, the United States promises to protect South Korea. Kim Kwan-jin said that South Korea and the United States will continue to discuss the missile defense system to ensure the defense capability of countering the missile threat of the DPRK and establish the system to strike and intercept the ballistic missile of the DPRK, which poses a hazard to stability of the Korean Peninsula.
The United States and South Korea have reached an agreement which extends the scope of South Korea's missiles to 800 kilometers. The Rodong Sinmun commented that the agreement not only targets the DPRK but also aims to realize U.S. ambition of dominating the Asia Pacific.
Both South Korea and the United States have made excuses for their actions. US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and his South Korean counterpart Kim Kwan-jin said that the DPRK has been stepping up the nuclear test since it launched nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009 respectively. Panetta condemned the DPRK for its "provocation" and reiterated the U.S. commitment to maintain the security of the Korean Peninsula.
South Korea will hold a presidential election at the end of 2012. The recent interactions between the United States and South Korea not only intensify the situation on the Korean Peninsula but also restrict adjustments of South Korean policies on the DPRK. Therefore, more efforts are required to alleviate the tense situation of Korean Peninsula in the future.
