How is China-basing in US presidential race different this time (2)

Second, trade competition between China and the United States is unprecedentedly fierce this year. Certain Americans believe that the United States must drive away Chinese products in order to revive domestic manufacturing. China’s large-scale investment in the country has also been considered a threat to U.S. national security.

Third, the United States has developed a deep strategic distrust to China unseen in decades. Whether the two countries will regain a proper understanding of each other will exert a great impact on the future policies.

These three differences mean that even after the election, the United States may continue to adopt discriminatory and competitive economic policies toward China.

In order to make his position known to voters, Barack Obama has used his power to make a series of strong moves against China, including imposing high tariffs on Chinese products, rejecting Chinese companies’ investment in the United States, and filing trade cases with the World Trade Organization against Chinese companies.

The changes also indicate that the China-U.S. relations will unlikely turn rosy soon after the presidential election. China should be prepared for this serious possibility.
