Pepsi can explosion severely injures boy (3)

(People's Daily Online)

08:14, August 30, 2012

At 9 p.m. on July 25, a boy from Jiading District, Shanghai took out a Pepsi cola from the fridge and opened it, and then the can suddenly exploded. The explosion was so fierce that the cap of the can hit the boy's face, causing a penetrating wound on the boy’s cheek. The external wound required 31 stitches while an internal wound required seven stitches. Pepsi Corporation has not yet responded to the incident.

At 1:26 a.m. on Aug. 26, netizen "Laura_xm" told her heart-breaking experience on her micro-blog. "At about 9 p.m., my son opened a can of Pepsi when it exploded. He has been transferred to three hospitals and now is in the Ninth People's Hospital. The external wound required 31 stitches while an internal wound needed seven stitches. My heart breaks when I think about it."

At 5 p.m. on Aug. 26, "Laura_xm" published a complaint against Pepsi on her micro-blog. She said that she had dialed the complaint number but the company always evaded its responsibility. Pepsi "is not responsible for customers' personal safety and not active in dealing with issues." At last, "Laura_xm" said if she still has not received a reply by the same time on Aug. 27, she would invite lawyers and the media to deal with it.

According to sources, this is not the first incident of a can of soda exploding and causing injury. Some explosions were caused by high temperatures and some were caused by low temperatures. According to insiders, when water freezes, its volume expands. Especially, when soda water freezes, the carbon dioxide in the water will separate. Therefore, when a can of coke is frozen, the expanded volume of the coke and the carbon dioxide will build pressure, distorting the can and even causing an explosion. Usually, a caution of such kind is written on the cans which reads, "Do not heat or freeze the can to below zero degrees Celsius."
