Chinese sci-fi eyes world market (2)

NOVELS VS. FILMS

Novels are not considered the only channel for pushing Chinese sci-fi content abroad, as the film industry remains wide open territory.

A movie based on the "Three Body" trilogy has been in the negotiation stage for a long time, but it has been a slow-moving process, Yao told Xinhua.

China's sci-fi movie industrial chain is quite immature compared to that of the United States, said Wu Yan, one of the top 10 Chinese sci-fi writers and the country's most famous sci-fi critic.

"From novels to e-books, movies, stage plays and derivative products...each point needs to be linked on the whole chain. It's not going to be a quick job," said Wu, who is also a professor with Beijing Normal University and China's only advisor for those pursuing master's degrees in science fiction.

The development of the Chinese sci-fi film industry has not only been hampered by a lack of skill and talents but, most importantly, by the lack of strong audience demand, Wu said.

He said Chinese audiences tend to opt for light-hearted love stories over Chinese-produced sci-fi films when they go to the movies.

"It will take a long time for Chinese sci-fi movies to develop. However, the boom in sci-fi literature is the foundation for the sci-fi film industry's success," he said.
