As a time-honored capital of commerce with a history of over 2,200 years, Guangzhou is one of the five national central cities in China and is the capital of Guangdong, which is the most advanced province in terms of the overall economic aggregate, he noted.

With an average annual growth rate of 14 percent over the past 30 years and a gross domestic product (GDP) standing at 1.24 trillion yuan (191 billion U.S. dollars) in 2011, Guangzhou has topped the list of Forbes Best Commercial City in China's mainland, he said.

Wan also added Guangzhou is a leading environmentally-friendly city in China, so that it has been granted the status of National Garden City and National Forest City.

He highlighted the southern city is home of the biannual Canton Fair, or China Import and Export Fair, founded by the Chinese government in 1957 and the largest trade fair in China, with an exhibition area of 1.16 million square meters and over 210,000 buyers from over 210 countries and regions in the world.

In this highly international context, commercial relations with Renaissance-center Italy cannot but flourish, Wan stressed wishing that "more and more enterprises from Italy invest and start business in Guangzhou, and an increasing number of citizens from Guangzhou get acknowledged with Italian excellences."

Last year, the trade exchange between Guangdong and Italy amounted to 9.4 billion U.S. dollars, up 14.7 percent from 2010, noted Luigi Scordamaglia, board of directors' member of the Italian Institute for Foreign Trade (I.C.E), one of the co-organizer institutions of the event.
