The 11th escort taskforce of the Navy of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) started the 462nd east-bound escort mission to escort 10 ships from 8 countries at 09:00 on the morning of June 16, 2012, local time.

After 30-plus hours of continuous sailing, the Chinese escort taskforce entered the eastern waters of the Gulf of Aden on the night of June 17 while the waves on the sea were rolling up to 3 to 4 meters high among gusty winds. To cope with the adverse sea conditions, the taskforce timely activated the emergency-responding mechanism to tackle the strong winds and high waves so as to ensure the safety of the voyage.

The storm grew more and more violent as the taskforce travelled eastward. On the morning of June 18, the escort taskforce safely escorted the 10 Chinese and foreign merchant ships to the terminal point in the eastern waters of the Gulf of Aden, and successfully completed the 462nd escort mission.
