SCO gains more impetus (2)

(People's Daily Online)

09:38, June 09, 2012

The SCO seeks lasting peace. In the next 10 years, the organization will face a more complex surrounding security environment, and encounter greater difficulties in maintaining regional peace. However, its member states’ new outlook on security and cooperation will help further deepen multilateral security cooperation.

The pursuit of lasting peace is a process of overcoming regional and international security challenges and fully safeguarding the security interests of the member states. In order to achieve lasting peace, the SCO member states should join forces in combating the "three evil forces" of separatism, extremism, and terrorism as well as drug trafficking and transnational crime, exchange information and intelligence, strengthen mutual military trust and law enforcement cooperation, and make concerted efforts to enhance security for major events. In addition, they should pay more attention to regional and international hot issues as well as information security, actively respond to emergencies in the region, and improve internal coordination to speak with one voice.

The SCO also seeks common prosperity. Currently, its member states are all at a critical period of economic transformation or structural reforms. The pursuit of common prosperity is a process of achieving maximum mutual benefit through multilateral economic cooperation among the member states.

In the context of volatile global markets and the deepening European sovereign debt crisis, the SCO member states will carry out extensive economic and trade cooperation to strengthen their ability to withstand risks. They will also explore new models of cooperation in ensuring financial, energy, and food security, enhance cross-border cooperation among companies, promote economic exchanges among border areas, and strengthen cooperation in fields such as disaster relief and alleviation as well as environmental protection.
