The Nanluoguxiang Theater Festival has, in its previous iterations, been overshadowed by the more established Beijing Fringe Festival with its young directors and experimental works.

Nevertheless, the festival offers willing people of different groups the chance to engage themselves in theater or showcase their works, said theater critic and playwright Tong Daoming, whose plays debuted at the first two festivals.

"It is a rare chance for those who couldn't present their works at the Fringe festival," said Tong. "Both young and old people have the chance to become 'new blood' in Chinese theater."
