MANAGING ONLINE MALPRACTICE ACCORDING TO LAW

As part of measures to purge online rumors and improve social integrity, Beijing began in mid-December 2011 to enforce new rules that require microbloggers to provide their true identities when registering for microblog accounts.

Real-name registration has been expanded to more cities, including Shanghai, Tianjin, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, according to Wang.

When asked to comment on the real-name registration policy, Wang said microblogging services have made it easier for irrational, negative and harmful information to circulate quickly despite microbloggings' positive role in improving public supervision and facilitating communication.

Generally speaking, with regard to Weibo, as well as other new online applications, the attitude of the government has been persistently supportive and it backs its development, Wang said.

Meanwhile, management needs to be strengthened in accordance with laws and regulations based on the actual situation, he said.

Online rumors that undermines stability, the circulation of obscene or harmful information, and the use of information for illegal commercial purposes will be managed and administered according to law, according to Wang.
