China's nursing homes falling behind (3)

GOVERNMENT EFFORTS

Professor Yin urged the government to encourage the construction of more nursing homes and train more qualified nurses in the face of a growing elderly population.

In December, China's State Council issued a five-year plan to create a social welfare system for elderly people. The plan stated that the government is considering creating nursing subsidies and developing community-based nursing homes.

By 2015, the country expects to provide 30 beds in nursing homes and community centers for every 1,000 elderly people, according to the plan.

The government should mobilize all available resources to ensure the welfare of senior citizens, rather than force them to rely solely on their families, said Mu Guangzong, a professor at the Institute of Population Research at Peking University.

"The aging population is an issue that needs to be addressed not only by elderly people and their families, but also by comprehensive and systematic measures taken by the government," Mu said.

It seems to be that a lack of resources is a common cause for concern for nursing homes all over the world and the nurses are struggling to carry out their roles as efficiently as they would like. However, the use of technology in care homes and hospitals such as nurse call systems is helping nurses to carry out their day to day responsibilities a good deal more efficiently which will, in turn, improve the quality of patient care as a whole.
