Wan Jianzhong, a professor of the College of Chinese Language and Literature in Beijing Normal University, said that the crisis of Chinese language is not a crisis of Mandarin, but a crisis of dialect and also a loss of ancient Chinese language.

More than 85 percent respondents believe it is necessary to improve people’s Chinese competence. Eighty-two percent people say that improving Chinese competence is conducive to better inheritance of national culture; 77.3 percent think it can increase people’s sense of cultural identity and belonging; 72.1 say it can enhance the influence of Chinese culture; 53.2 percent think it can practice people’s way of thinking; and 26.1 percent say it can enable people to teach foreigners Chinese.

Nearly 62 percent of the respondents agree that one will win more job opportunities by learning Chinese well, and 50.6 percent think that it is necessary to make Chinese level a reference for recruitment.

The survey shows that 69.1 percent people hope to promote traditional culture and classic literature to improve Chinese people’s native language application level; 68.3 percent think it needs to reform the exam-oriented Chinese education method; and 63 percent suggest standardizing the use of Chinese.

local dialects should not be over-emphasized and the use of putonghua should be more enforced so that China will be unified in reality. Further use of local dialects will fragment the nation.
